Gifts From IRAs

A qualified IRA charitable distribution can benefit you and Gospel City.

If you are age 70½ or older, you can make gifts directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to Gospel City Church without paying income tax on the withdrawal.

  • You must be age 70½ or older at the time the gift is made.
  • You must request from your IRA plan custodian a direct transfer of funds to Gospel City Church for the gift to be tax-free.
  • Gifts can be any amount up to $100,000 each year and can also be used to satisfy your IRA-required minimum distributions.

Funds held in other types of retirement plans do not qualify but may be rolled over into an IRA, then used to make tax-free gifts to Gospel City.

It is important to know:

  • IRA gifts are not deducted on your federal tax return. Instead, you simply avoid paying federal income tax on the required distribution because it is not included in your income.
  • You may be able to make rollover transfers from your 403(b), 401(k) or other retirement plans to your IRA, then make gifts through your IRA.
  • Whether IRA gifts are a good plan of stewardship based on your circumstances.
  • You will want to verify whether or not your state income tax is also avoided.

The following information should be used to name Gospel City Church as a beneficiary of your IRA:

Name: Gospel City Church, Inc.
Offices: 52277 Hickory Rd.
Granger, IN 46530
Federal Tax ID Number: 26-2159056

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) generally is a nontaxable distribution made directly by the trustee of your IRA (other than a SEP or SIMPLE IRA) to an organization eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. You must be at least age 70½ when the distribution was made. Also, you must have the same type of acknowledgment of your contribution that you would need to claim a deduction for a charitable contribution. See Records To Keep in Pub. 526.

The maximum annual exclusion for QCDs is $100,000. Any QCD in excess of the $100,000 exclusion limit is included in income as any other distribution. If you file a joint return, your spouse also can have a QCD and exclude up to $100,000. The amount of the QCD is limited to the amount of the distribution that would otherwise be included in income. If your IRA includes nondeductible contributions, the distribution is first considered to be paid out of otherwise taxable income. (IRS Pub 590-B)
